How do you respond in fear or crisis? Hurricane Dorian observations, rants and thoughts from Fish Stewarding Group Brand Messaging Strategist Loren Weisman.

How do you respond in fear or crisis? Gas Station Drama almost too good for television.
Yesterday morning in Vero Beach I watched an old lady scream at a man that was apparently taking too long at the gas pump, while two other people almost crashed into each other to get a gas pump. Then inside this Cumberland Farms/Gas Station in Vero Beach, I watched people acting more rude and so incredibly selfish.
Eyeing the hurricane but also eyeing the responses to the coming storm.
Yes, there is a hurricane coming. Still, I watched this occur on a Thursday morning, which is a solid four days out from the proposed impact on the area. It doesn’t matter though, eyeing the responses, it was an interesting view and comparison to that old MTV’s Real World TV show tagline… “what happens when people stop being nice and start being real.”
It was fascinating, but also sad.
I used to make the joke about how I wanted to experience a client driving, then how they tip and lastly how they talk to those in customer service. To me, that was a great benchmark and test of how people handle themselves with honor, respect and basic morals.
I want to add how people respond to a coming crisis, fear or a pending situation.
There were a few kind, considerate and aware individuals that (and even in their own fears and concerns) acted with honor, love and respect for those around them. I enjoyed watching them. They were beautiful people inside and out, doing all they could for their needs but still staying in focus of those around them. It was not just about them. These are people I would want to know, would want to work with and would want to call friends.
How do you respond to fear or crisis? Do you use love, calm or at least responding with an awareness and kindness to others.
It is more than finding the people or teams that operate in the best of times and best of circumstances, to resonate strength, respect and honor with your business and in your teams, work to communicate and learn about how they act and react in those times where you really need them to step up…
and stepping up not just to handle the job, but to handle themselves with honor, dignity and integrity with others.

This GOES-16 satellite image taken, at 14:20 UTC and provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), shows Hurricane Dorian, right, moving over open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Dorian was expected to grow into a potentially devastating Category 3 hurricane before hitting the U.S. mainland late Sunday or early Monday somewhere between the Florida Keys and southern Georgia

Oh and lastly, add to the rant, it is hard to deal with the half truth hype that gets thrown around too. A massive rumor tied to The Weather Channel‘s Jim Cantore had him at all these different places all over Vero Beach, Florida in the last 24 hours. One of my favorites was when a friend in Pennsylvania sent a text saying that he was at the Ocean Grille right now! This was a picture I took of the Ocean Grille about ten minutes later.
